Find the failed turn

Stair width is only one part of a furniture turn.

Stair deliveries usually fail at a combination of constraints: a narrow flight, a short landing, a low ceiling, a rail that steals turning room, or a doorway placed too close to the turn. This checker compares the furniture's narrow rigid side with stair width, its longest side with a simplified landing diagonal, and its taller cross-section with the lowest overhead clearance.

The landing diagonal is a screening device, not a simulated move. Real furniture rotates in three dimensions while the stair slope, banisters, newel posts, lights, door frames, and workers occupy space. For that reason, even a passing calculation remains a caution result and calls for a delivery review.

Worked example

A compact loveseat at a 90 cm stair and landing

A loveseat measures 150 cm long, 88 cm deep, and 78 cm high. The narrowest stair width is 90 cm, the clear landing depth is 140 cm, and the lowest overhead point is 210 cm.

The 78 cm narrow furniture side clears the 90 cm stair. The simplified landing diagonal is about 166 cm, which exceeds the 150 cm furniture length, and the overhead screen also passes. The result remains cautionary because the stair slope and actual pivot are not modeled.

  • Measure the landing as clear floor available to the turn, excluding the next tread, trim, radiators, and stored objects.
  • Use the lowest ceiling, soffit, light, or underside-of-stair point along the complete lifting path, not the ceiling height at the landing centre.
  • Repeat the check for every flight and landing. The smallest combined constraint controls the delivery route.

Build the route from the outside in

Walk from the unloading point to the final room in delivery order. Measure building doors, vestibules, hallways, stair flights, every landing, and the destination doorway. Label each number with a photograph and note whether a door, rail, or light can legally and safely be moved. Do not assume a removable-looking building component may be removed.

For a turning stair, sketch a top view with the clear stair width, landing depth, nearby door swing, and the direction of the next flight. Add a side view showing slope and overhead obstructions. A simple labelled sketch gives a delivery coordinator more useful evidence than an isolated list of room dimensions.

Know what the diagonal does not prove

The checker uses the rectangular landing diagonal to reject obviously impossible length-and-landing combinations. Passing that comparison does not prove the furniture can attain the required angle or that workers can control it safely. A high back, projecting arm, rigid corner, or limited approach can still block the maneuver.

Send the product dimensions, packaging information, route sketch, and photographs to the retailer or carrier before scheduling. Confirm elevator reservations, delivery hours, insurance requirements, and return terms. Leave lifting, tilting, rail removal, and final safety decisions to the delivery professionals on site.
