Passing the elevator door is not the same as fitting inside.
An elevator creates two separate geometry tests. The item must first cross the clear door opening, then occupy the cabin in an orientation allowed by its width, depth, and height. This checker tries all six right-angle assignments of the furniture dimensions and reports whether at least one fits both conditions.
The method is intentionally conservative in one way and incomplete in another. It does not award extra space for a diagonal insertion, which avoids presenting an uncertain maneuver as a pass. It also cannot model the hallway turn outside the elevator, handrails, control panels, protective pads, door timing, weight limits, or building delivery rules.
Worked example
A compact piece in a residential elevator
A rigid item measures 185 cm long, 85 cm deep, and 75 cm high. The elevator door is 90 cm wide by 210 cm high, and the cabin is 150 cm wide, 200 cm deep, and 230 cm high.

One simple orientation places the 85 cm side across the cabin, the 185 cm length into its depth, and the 75 cm side vertically. That orientation fits the entered door and cabin dimensions, so the checker returns a caution rather than a rejection.
The 5 cm door-width margin is vulnerable to padding, measurement error, a door that does not stay fully open, or a hallway approach that prevents a square entry.
Cabin dimensions must be measured inside any required protective padding and to the lowest rail, light, or ceiling obstruction.
A passing cabin orientation says nothing about the corridor turn, building permission, elevator weight rating, or safe handling.

Measure the elevator in its delivery condition
Ask building management which elevator and entrance must be used, whether protective blankets or wall panels are mandatory, and whether those protections reduce the clear cabin. Measure the narrowest door gap with the doors fully open, the lowest opening height, and all three usable cabin dimensions. Do not rely on capacity labels or a leasing brochure for geometry.
Stand outside the elevator and measure the approach too. A narrow corridor, opposing wall, vestibule door, or sharp turn can prevent the furniture from aligning with an otherwise adequate entrance. Repeat the route check from the building door to the elevator and from the elevator to the final room.

Use the result to ask a better building question
When the checker finds no right-angle orientation, the entered dimensions do not support a simple fit. Do not assume a diagonal maneuver will solve it. Ask the delivery company whether it can assess the route from a dimensioned sketch and photographs, or whether the product can be delivered in smaller approved modules.
When an orientation passes, share that exact orientation with building management and the carrier. Include item weight, packaged dimensions, elevator booking details, loading access, and any required certificate of insurance. The building and delivery teams decide whether the move is permitted and safe.
